The Monorail Society tells us that 'No monorail in history captured the attention of the public quite like Walt Disney's Alweg Monorail did when it opened in 1959. The result would be the unfortunate type–casting of monorails being "theme park rides," except in Japan.' Wikipedia describes the Disneyland monorail as 'the first daily operating monorail system in the Western Hemisphere'; I have been unable to work out what Wikipedia considers to be the first in the world, but the Monorail Society describes one that opened in 1957 at Ueno Zoo, Tokyo. It fails to note that this could be considered another "theme park ride".
